Residential locksmith

House locksmith visits for lockouts, rekeys, repairs, and lock installation at the door.

Residential locksmith work is for houses, condos, townhouses, and rental suites. The usual requests are a home lockout, a rekey after keys go missing, a deadbolt that no longer lines up, or new hardware on a door that has never locked properly.

A house locksmith visit happens at the door. You do not remove the lock and queue at a shop. The technician needs a safe place to work and proof you may authorize the job: identification plus a lease, bill, or ownership paper that matches the address.

If the problem is a car in the driveway, use automotive locksmith instead. If the door is a storefront, use commercial locksmith.

Rekeying

New keys for existing locks after a move or a lost set.

Repairs

Latches, cylinders, and strikes that no longer line up.

Common situations

Which door is it?

Front or back entry

Deadbolt and handle, the most common residential job.

Condo or rental suite

Bring the lease or a note from the owner if the lock is restricted.

Sliding patio door

Often a different lock body from a hinged door.

Garage personnel door

Say if it is the small door, not the overhead motor.

Rekey, repair, or replace

Rekeying is the right conversation when the hardware is healthy and the keys are the problem: a move, a former roommate, a lost set. Lock repair and installation is the right conversation when the latch, cylinder, or strike is failing, or when you want a new deadbolt or smart lock fitted.

Patio and sliding doors fail differently from a front-door deadbolt. Name the door in the request so the visit is stocked for that hardware.

Rentals and shared buildings

Condo and apartment rules sometimes restrict the lock on a common door. Effint will not bypass a building’s access system against the property’s instructions. For a suite door you are allowed to change, the usual residential work applies. Building fobs are often managed by the condominium corporation, not programmed like a car.

Questions

Practical answers

What does a residential locksmith handle?

Home lockouts, rekeying, lock repair, lock installation, and advice on whether a smart lock is a sensible fit. Automotive work is a different category.

I am locked out of the house. Is that this page?

Yes. Also read emergency locksmith if you need someone as soon as possible. Have identification and a document that links you to the address.

Can you rekey instead of replacing the locks?

Often. Rekeying keeps the hardware and changes the key. Replacement makes more sense when the lock is worn, forced, or the wrong grade. The rekey page explains the difference.

Do you install smart locks?

Yes. Installation of a smart lock you have chosen, or one agreed on the visit, is covered with lock repair and installation.
